CHALLENGE #9

Out of the Past

Directed by Jacques Tourneur
1947 - United States - 85 min

Summary:

Everything you want in a film noir you'll find in Out of the Past. A tenacious detective (Robert Mitchum) spinning his wheels to make good. A drop-dead beauty (Jane Greer) up to no good. A moneyed mobster (Kirk Douglas) with a shark's grin. Plus double-crosses and fall guys. Shadowy rooms and bleak souls. Mitchum solidified his tough-guy persona in this archetypal film noir directed with memorable style by Jacques Tourneur. He plays Jeff Bailey, a one-time private investigator walking the straight and narrow of small-town life... until an acquaintance from his past pulls him back into troubles he'd left behind.

POEMS FROM THIS CHALLENGE:

FIRE
By
Allison Taylor

Their love is a fire:
It burns through night.
Passionate and wild,
They play with the light,
Living for the moment,
They let the sparks fly;
Forgetting for a second,
All fires die.
Just beyond the threshold,
Awaits the killing rain,
But when the fire is gone,
Embers still remain,
Resting in the ashes,
They shall soon return.
Fires can be rekindled,
Once again they burn.
Will they survive?
And succeed in their flight?
Or will they be destroyed by the flames?
And only have this night?

LOST LOVE
By
Jacqui Flatch

Love and lies
Lies and love
Hidden goodbyes
Have yet to come
Foreseen betrayal
Knives stuck in a back
A deadly doll
Surprise attack
The smoke it clears
Away it goes
You see your fears
And then you know
You're the next on the list
You're the next to die
You shouldn't have kissed
And fallen for the lie

DECEPTIONS=FLEETING LOVE
By
Callie MacNeill

Dark shadows shade our love
Along with our true intentions
Rain beats down violently
Blurring and smudging the lines
Between trust and deception
Lies
Both the words in my mouth
And the love in my heart
But you'd never know in such a dark room

FORBIDDEN
By
Kara Gaburon

Forbidden fruit tastes the sweetest,
At least that's what they say.
I've never believed in such farce,
That is-up until today.
With your pulse and mine,
Beating in perfect time,
I've taken that poisoned bite.
         I should've known . . .
They're right.

NOIR NOIR
By
Jackie Klein

Is it the air that chills you?
Or is it your own intentions?
What a life you lead,
Of greed, violence, and lust.
You have her And she has you,
At least for this one moment.
In my eyes it's black and white.
You're this
Or You're that.
But keep in mind,
it's the same for her,
The girl that you kiss has a past.

OUT OF THE PAST
By
Jessica Munyon

The past is repulsive,
Unsatisfied when he has to return,
To find her again.
Betrayal.
He felt but still fell down,
Into her dreadful curse,
He never prepared for the worst.
Thought he could,
Play the game.
But yet,
She still took him down.
Unsuspected.
He thought he had her trust,
Turns out it was all just lust.
Now he lies dead,
Couldn't play the game,
But she can,
Seeking
To
Find
A
New
Man.

EXHILARATING LOVE
By
Nicole Bell

Oh how exhilarating!
The rush of the cool moist air,
with a rush of hot passionate lips placed gently on a cold collar bone.
With fear
displaced as overconfidence.
Afraid.
Of nothing but unreturned love.
Hope.
For a new beginning,
a happier ending
with just you and me.
A promise of love in this downpour of rain.
To cool off our passion
to say what we need to say
and make anew, begin.

OUT OF THE PAST
By
David Riley

A light burning, a house a bolt hole
Symbolically safe from the outside storm.
A place where drying off is intimate,
Dreams can be shared the future serenely surveyed:
But we know it isn't like that:
This world's rules don't allow for happy endings
And even its conventions are double edged.
That ill-locked door blown wide by the wind?
Passes the time between lovers
Fooling each other with unseen kisses -
It can only stay open so long before
Their world is cut off, drowning in fears
Told by prophets who should have known better
Than to believe there could be an escape.
